    Story so far.... | 
    The art dept want to see how the tram 
      is coming along, so we set up the tram with whatever relevant furniature 
      we have for the shot. The art dept is based at Elstree, so we send the images 
      down the line and vice-versa...or is that the other way around? The tram 
      is basically FOAMEX, which is pretty smooth as a rule, but it is quite soft 
      and very easily textured and marked with a dremel. |

    A close up of the gate showing 
      the REAL rust. This is achieved by spray mounting iron powder onto it, spraying 
      with hydrochloric acid and leaving outside overnight.Kids, dont try spraying 
      Hydrochloric acid at home! |

    Slimey inside.. | 
    . ...well, they are Vogons! Here you 
      can see the double skinned construction of the tram....creating a void for 
      the transportation of lighting wires, giving the concrete some thickness |

    Lookout below! | 
    Another victim of the rust fairies...the 
      roof itself was not supposed to have been seen from above like this, but 
      you never can be sure these days, so many directors dont stick to storyboards, 
      or do, and film additional scenes, get creative. The day you dont make something 
      half decent is the day they go up real close and fill the frame with it. 
      Sods law. I tend to do these little extras after work in my own time. Alas, 
      this was NOT seen. Maybe I should have done what I was told. Naughty boy. 
      The thinking behind the big holes was that there are always big chunks of 
      masonary falling off the badly maintained vogon buildings...and from a great 
      high too! |

    Kinda looks over dirty, but a lot of 
      that will be lost when they hit it with those studio lights...maybe its

    Looks like someone else finished him 
      off...well, they didnt, thats all my own work. Im proud of this little vogon, 
      one of the best things Ive done for a movie. Even more of a shame when you 
      cant see him in the movie. No value for money on this one Im afraid.  |

    Salon beautiful hair | 
    Plumbers hemp was used for the vogons 
      hair. Plenty of room inside But who'd want to get in, with all that slime 
      around? Only another Vogon. Had there been the time and the budget I would 
      have cast some more vogons and placed them inside. "You're never going to 
      see them" Bill said. He was right. |

    Where's it going? | 
    Its going from left to right. Enters 
      frame stage left, travels towards the vogon waiting at the bus stop....build 
      up towards it stopping (build up for the gag)...only to find it doesnt, 
      it drives on and then exits frame stage right..about 11 seconds on the storyboard. 
      What the viewer sees is the tram from a point just prior to the bus stop 
      and a second or two afterwards...oh well. |

    Moment of truth.. | 
    . Now, dont fall apart ....not that 
      any of my models ever have. More dribbles on the windows are asked for. 
      This is the part you get the most buzz from (prior to seeing the movie that 
      is), making sure the model looks its best...or in the case of vogon technology, 
      its worst. Bit like putting the make-up on a star before they shout action. 
      What the camera doesnt see... .....The hidden slot in the set and track 
      for the tram to travel on. |

    Are you ready? (to do the bus-stop) | 
    This is about as close as we get to 
      the tram. The Vogon city will be composited in behind the tram. Some arcing 
      will be added in post-production, as will be a CGI Vogon at the bus-stop. |

    Just a shape | 
    This would have been all you would have 
      seen of the Vogon driver - had this angle been used.It was shot. But never 
      used. |

    Wot, no driver? | 
    For the wide shots of the Vogon city..a 
      1:100 scale tram was needed. I was the logical man for the job. Again..in 
      foamex. This is as far as I took it. Vinny painted it up. I think scales 
      got mixed up a bit. The scale of the destroyer(and therefore the city) was 
      about 1:500...but I couldnt make a 1:500 tram - you'de never see it! As 
      it was closer to camera, it kind of forces the perspective anyway. |

    Good job Vinny..again, one of those 
      details that registers subconsciously...if your lucky. Depth of field problems 
      with this digital camera of mine...I must get an SLR digital one day. I 
      actually got this tram back after the shoot. No chance with the big one 
      though. That (and the driver) got stolen off the stage!  |

    What tram?  | 
    This shot gives us an idea of how large 
      the Vogon buildings are actually supposed to be. A mile high I think was 
      mooted....even at 1:100 you can hardly see it. |
